Fan Page Challenge Day 5 – Visiting Other Pages

Welcome to Day 5 and today we are going to discuss some tips and pitfalls to avoid when visiting other pages.

fpcday5

Visiting other pages is very important to the success of your Facebook strategy, and I have been advising that you do this every day.

I hope you have been giving it a try – but there is an etiquette to follow so that people are happy to see your post on their page.

Later on in the Challenge I will show you an even better way to get your posts on other people’s pages in a way which they will welcome and which will get you tons of exposure.

No-one, I am sure, wants to engage in Facebook behaviour that could alienate the very people they are trying to engage with, and it is usually simple lack of knowledge about the correct etiquette to use.

What are some of the behaviours that perhaps don’t quite cut it on Facebook:-

  • Posting self promotional content on others pages without invitation.
  • Posting ‘please like my page’ messages
  • Always posting on other pages as your page

Posting self promotional content on others pages is definitely seen by most page owners as spam and would be deleted.  Think about how you would feel if, when you have spent lots of time and effort growing your page, people come along and say ‘buy my stuff’ – what would you think? Not printable!

When you pop along to visit other pages try not to say ‘please like my page’ – I know the temptation to get more likes is huge but it will back fire. Instead, find a post on their page and say something complimentary about it, or compliment their timeline cover or one of their images.

Also think about whether you post as you or your page. If you post as your page consistently and your page name is nothing like your name then how will you build a relationship with that page owner. They won’t know who you really are, and if you visit a lot as your page it could start to look spammy.

So do continue to visit pages but think about the impression you make when you get there.

Sue,
These are great tips that everyone should follow. I don't like to visit someone's page and just say hi. I like to read through the page and find things that interest me before I choose to like it; then I introduce myself & compliment the page in some way. Makes it more personal, don't you think? Learned my lesson long ago not to just say Hi, visit my page! One should treat the page just like a potential customer and not bombard with an offer/request right away.

It's been very motivating. I think it's the fact that there new things to get done each day that just keeps us coming back (I tried the connect with Facebook and it wouldn't work so I'm doing it the "old fashioned way"

Well we are now onto Day 5 of Sue's Fan Page Challenge and what a delight it has been so far!
Not only is it really enjoyable connecting with and finding out about other page owners, but we are learning a great deal along the way.
Sue has obviously put an immense amount of time and effort into creating and running this challenge (which is absolutely free)and is extremely professional in her approach.
I shall definitely be here for the long haul!

I've had a Facebook page for just over a year now and the number of 'likes' have been growing steadily. But since beginning The Fanpage challenge with Sue Worthington - five days ago - my page likes have increased by 8.6% and the number of people talking about my page has increased by 482%! Sue's relaxed, friendly and informative style make learning a pleasure. I've also made some useful contacts through the Facebook group. Thank you Sue. Kind regards Anne

This is good advice about liking other pages. It get's a little confusing for me because my profile and page are the same name - but as you mentioned here, that might be helpful because when I post with my page, I am helping connect with my name as well!

  3. Nice start on etiquette! Especially the “LIKE MY PAGE” Makes me feel like Jr. High. again, and I did not care for it the first time through.

I am good with a Hello, found you through ….. If you make a comment or like one of my posts, I am probably going to check out your page, and like it if I am interested!

For the really annoying people, they can be blocked from Fan Pages. If someone is spamming, block them! (short version of Say NO to letting someone spam your Facebook Fan Page)

    Hi Sue,

It is a difficult choice as to know when to post as yourself or your Page.
If your page is about one product then you must Post as yourself, because you are the Brand, but if your company is a lot bigger than 1 product, You may have to post as your page sometimes, because you would be trying to Brand that Business.

I would be interested to know your , and others, thoughts on this.

      Hi Bruce

Yes it is – I always think that if you post as your page all the time it might not always be apparent who you actually are, so not as easy to build those all important relationships.
So I agree mix it up

      Thanks for your insightful comment
      Sue
