Create Your Presence With Social Media

How many of you think that Social Media is here to stay or are you part of the minority who still believes that this is just a passing fad?  If you’re still thinking that you don’t need to get involved with all this ‘social stuff’ well I’m afraid to say that statistics say differently.

According to Hubspot: ‘92% of marketers in 2014 claimed that Social Media Marketing was important for their business’, and ‘80% said that their efforts using Social Media increased traffic to their website’.

According to Social Media Examiner: ‘97% of marketers currently participate in Social Media Marketing, BUT ‘85% of participants said that they are still not sure what Social Media tools to use’.

Clearly from these numbers there is a big potential for increasing your sales with social media but also still a lack of understanding on how to achieve results.

Not too long ago it was enough to simply have a website alone, and now not only do you need a website but also a profile on many other Social sites too!  The reason you need this presence is really quite simple – so that the people who want to do business with you can find you easily.

Search engine optimisation used to be the preserve of the bigger businesses who could afford this time and resource intensive expense, but now Social Media is fast becoming, in fact probably has become, the new way to optimise your web presence.  You can drive traffic very effectively back to your website by being active on all the main social media platforms, and it needn’t cost you anything but your time and an investment in learning how to do it properly.

It is easy to check out how ‘social search’ is becoming so important in getting your business found – Google your chosen search term and you will most likely find Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn results on Page 1.

So if you are going to create a presence on these Social Media sites it makes sense to do it properly and make sure you are getting the maximum benefits from each – and that starts with your profiles.

Always make sure that your profile reflects what you want your prospects to know about you, likewise your content.  Treading the fine line between social and business is often very difficult.  Yes you should inject some personality into your tweets and updates, but think carefully before divulging your alcohol consumption, your football team preferences, your political views or any other strange personal habits you may have!

You may find if you become too ‘social’ it may have the opposite effect to the one you are striving for.

So it is sometimes quite a difficult task to achieve the perfect balance between private and professional, and remember you will never please everyone.

But I think that if you are comfortable with your social media voice, you can always find plenty of things to discuss and the tone of your postings matching your type of business then you should be OK.

So the first stage of your plan should be to make sure you have all your platforms fully complete and looking their best.

Take advantage of the about section

Optimise each profile with keywords, and use as many links as are allowed. This will vary from platform to platform. For example on Google+ you can have as many links as you wish,but Twitter just the one, Linkedin you can have 3. So make sure you have as many links as are allowed on each individual platform.

Do your keyword research

This needn’t be complicated and it is amazing just by going into the google keyword planner what ideas you can get which you wouldn’t otherwise think of. Consider what words you would use when looking for your business and plug those into the keyword planner. you will get other related words which you may not have thought of. Create a spreadsheet and refer to this when creating your posts.

Headers and profile images

Make sure the images are professional, and reflect the branding of your business. Keep styles and colours consistent across all platforms.

    I have not doubt that social media will be around for a long time. If anything, I have first hand proof by how much time my family spends on FB alone.

    Although, I am of the group that does not quite understand how to use it properly or the right tools. Seems like there are too many social tools these days, not sure which is best or which is the right one. Plus which is the best social platform to spend the time on. Just read the other day, Copyblogger dropping their FB page, it wasn’t working well enough for them. Guess it takes testing, trial and error.

    For me, the other thing is the time commitment, I just don’t think I have the time to do it properly.

      Thanks for visiting.
      I think that is a common problem – too many platforms and not knowing which to use.
      Personally think Copyblogger should not have done that but I guess they have a big enough audience elsewhere
      I always say that focus on one platform and master that, get a routine going and then move on to the next.

  2. Helpful tips Sue,

    From an SEO point of view, social media is a strong and powerful ranking factors, as declared by Google. One thing I have come to discover is that a post that is shared on Twitter, Google plus, Facebook, LinkedIn and pinterest tends to rank high on Google search pages ( with all other factors being equal).

    When I first launched my blog and focused heavily on the use of twitter, Google plus and Facebook, I noticed that my blog was ranking high on Google, however, for the past 5-6 months, I’ve relaxed and they are not doing well on the search pages.

    So, for 2015, I will be focusing heavily on the use of social media networks.

    I learn more about social media from you because of your “big picture” approach. Connecting the accounts in various social media outlets together is more meaningful for me. I was lost in the disconnects between my accounts. I am less “afraid” of the mistakes I can make at this point than I was a week ago.

    Thank you for pulling the lid off Pandora’s box for me. That first peek inside was less scary than I thought it would be.

    Now – back to work for me!
